Marie C. Johns has been a leader in business, civic and government service for more than 30 years, particularly, in the areas of education and economic development. She retired as President of Verizon Washington. In 2009, Marie was nominated by President Barack Obama and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). During her tenure, she formed the SBA’s Council on Underserved Communities and her initiatives resulted in lending more than $30 billion to more than 60,000 small businesses, a record in SBA history. Currently, Marie is Managing Member of Leftwich, LLC and Founder/President of Leftwich Consulting, a business development, organizational effectiveness and public policy consulting practice. Marie continues to be very involved in civic leadership. The recipient of over 100 awards, her current roles include serving as a member of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s Federal Law Enforcement Nominating Commission, a trustee of Howard University, a member of the Federal City Council, a director of City First Bank and Hager Sharp and a Senior Steward at Metropolitan AME Church. She has been awarded honorary degrees from Howard University, Trinity University and the University of the District of Columbia.
