Marie C. Johns has been a leader in business, civic and government service for more than 30 years, focusing particularly in the areas of education and economic development.
In 2009 Ms. Johns, who retired as president of Verizon Washington in 2004, was nominated by President Barack Obama, and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, to serve as deputy administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). During her tenure, she formed the SBA’s Council on Underserved Communities, and her initiatives resulted some $30 billion in lending to 60,000 small businesses, an SBA record.
Currently Ms. Johns is managing member of Leftwich, LLC and founder and president of Leftwich Consulting, a business development, organizational effectiveness and public policy consulting practice.
Ms. Johns continues to be actively involved in civic leadership. The recipient of more than 100 awards, she serves as a member of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s Federal Law Enforcement Nominating Commission, a trustee of Howard University, a trustee of the Federal City Council, a director of City First Bank and Hager Sharp and a senior steward at Metropolitan AME Church.
Ms. Johns has been awarded honorary degrees from Howard University, Trinity University and the University of the District of Columbia.
