Battleground National Cemetery

The second smallest national cemetery in the United States is just a few blocks east of Fort Stevens. President Lincoln dedicated this battleground soon after the skirmish at Fort Stevens. Forty Union soldiers who died in defense of Washington, DC are buried here. The entrance to the Cemetery is flanked by two 6-pounder, smoothbore guns of Civil War vintage. Also near the entrance are monuments commemorating those units which fought at Fort Stevens.

The Chesapeake and Ohio (C & O) Canal stretches from Georgetown to Cumberland, MD. The route is great for walking, running, biking and bird watching. The Canal spreads the distance of184. 5 miles and is home to a variety of wildlife including beaver, fox, raccoon, muskrat and woodchuck. In summer, you can fish and boat on the canal or take a mule-drawn barge ride with costumed US Park Service guides detailing the history through stories and songs as you slip past the restored warehouses and mills of Georgetown. Canal barge rides are available Wednesday-Sunday at 11 am, 1 and 3 pm. There is an admission charge.
